Type II Fun

“There are old climbers and there are bold climbers, but there are no old, bold climbers.”

“Type I fun is just regular fun. It’s fun while you’re doing it. Type II fun feels miserable at the time, but with enough time, is remembered with nostalgia. Type III fun is never fun, no matter how much time has passed.”

These stories both happened long time ago and were written a long time ago. And I was doubly brash: in actions yes, but with the written word as well, feeling myself out as a writer.

Looking back, I feel lucky to be alive and without permanent injuries. Partly I simply don’t climb as much as I used to. Partly, with a family, I feel an actual sense of commitment to get back home safely. Mostly, I don’t feel like I have anything to prove - most of all to myself.

I intend to be an old climber.
